Never underestimate the power a simple ‘thank you’ note or a message of encouragement can have on somebody’s day. And life.

I’d like to take a moment this week to pause and talk about the power of words. The impact that a simple note, a gesture, a sign of recognition can have on others.

I think we are great with actions and words when things are difficult, especially in times of grief.

I recently lost a dear family member and every word and gesture I received offered me so much comfort. I felt really supported and mostly grateful.

This experience reminded me how easy it is to overlook the importance of expressing thanks during the good times. It is like we take things for granted a little.

If we bring this to a different level, as a business owner, I know how impactful some testimonials have been on my career. Sometimes they have been the fuel I needed to keep going. Somebody said to me recently something like ‘I can’t conceive a world without your beautiful photography in it’. Wow. I think that one I will carry with me forever.

A few words can really make your day and they work both ways; for the person writing and for the person who receives them.

Gratitude creates more gratitude.

Can I ask you, when was the last time you wrote a heartfelt thank you note? Who did you write it to?

Who would you like to thank? Perhaps an old teacher, a friend, a family member… How do you think it will be received?

I encourage you to take a couple of minutes this week and send a few messages of gratitude to friends and small businesses who provided a good service for you.

For extra points, put pen to paper and send a hand written note.

I’d love to know how it felt for you, and what was the reaction.

And before I sign off, let me show you a beautiful little film I watched a few years ago. Artist Lori Portka worked for two years to make 100 paintings for 100 people who had a positive impact on her life.

Feel free to keep the conversation going in the comments.
